How we got started...
Niederfrank's was started by Ed Niederfrank and his brother, Elmer (Poppa),
in April 1948. Ed had graduated from Iowa
State University
as a creamery operator. He and his brother decided to go into business
together. The result was one of the first ice cream stores in National
City.
The shop started with 22 flavors. Some of them were seasonal but there were
an average of 15 flavors throughout the year. The current owners, Mary
Ellen Faught and Patti Finegan, started working at the store in 1994 and
bought it in 1995.

Q: How is your ice cream unique? Is there really a difference between your
ice cream and the national brands?
A: Many people don't know that air is pumped into most ice creams to give
the impression of creaminess and add extra volume. At Niederfrank's, we
carefully handcraft every flavor with only the purest of natural
ingredients.

A: While there are no unpopular flavors, Strawberry and French Vanilla are
our most requested. Some classics never die.
